Senate Committee Issues Subpoenas for Supreme Court Ethics Hearing

Minority party members oppose the investigation into the luxury gifts to justices.

The Senate Judiciary Committee authorized subpoenas to two individuals last week as more information is sought regarding gifts to members of the Supreme Court. The panel held a meeting before voting to subpoena a real estate developer from Texas and a lawyer-activist for their gifts to Supreme Court justices.

Members of the minority party walked out as their colleagues held the vote to issue the subpoenas, claiming that the decision had partisan motivations. Some claimed the committee subverted its rules to stage the vote.

Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois, the chairman of the committee, said the subpoenas were necessary to determine whether a formal code of ethics for the Supreme Court would be necessary in light of the luxury gifts.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For discernment for the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee as they seek information on the luxury gifts to Supreme Court justices.
  • For Senator Durbin to be prudent as he presides over the investigation.
  • For the justices of the Supreme Court who recently instituted their own code of ethics.
